Why We Built This Site
Florida makes most jail and inmate information available to the public under Chapter 119, the state's broad public-records law. The harder part is figuring out which agency actually holds a person, because the custody trail can move from a county jail to a state prison to a federal facility, each with its own search tool. The Monroe County Sheriff's Office runs the local detention system, covering three facilities spread across the Florida Keys for pre-trial detainees and people serving short county sentences. People sentenced to state prison transfer to the Florida Department of Corrections, which maintains its own statewide offender locator. Federal defendants and immigration detainees fall under the Bureau of Prisons or ICE, which run separate online systems.
